Each page is rendered as an image at the chosen resolution, re-encoded as JPEG and placed into a new PDF. This is the most effective method on scans and image-heavy documents, where it commonly divides the size by five to ten. The trade-off: text becomes an image, so it is no longer selectable or searchable. For a text-only document, prefer light compression.
