FAQ
What this site does, what it does not, and why. Written to be understood with no technical knowledge at all.
What is Utily, in one sentence?
A toolbox: hundreds of small tools that each solve one precise problem — shrink a PDF, compress a photo, work out a percentage, convert units. You search for what you need, use it, and you are done.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
Everything is free and no account is needed. There is no paid tier, no limited trial, no cap of three files a day. You arrive, you use it, you leave.
Are my files sent anywhere?
No, for nearly every tool. When you drop a PDF or a photo, the file is read by the page itself, transformed in your browser, then offered back for download. It never travels over the internet. That is also why big files work fine: nothing to upload, nothing to wait for.
What do “100% local” and “Server request” mean?
“100% local” means everything happens in your browser: nothing leaves your device. “Server request” marks the few tools that need information which only exists on the network — your public IP address, a DNS record, an exchange rate, or the AI tools. The badge sits at the top of every tool.
Why is the text no longer selectable after compressing a PDF?
Because compression turns each page into an image. That is what divides the size by five or ten on a scan or a photo-heavy document. The trade-off: text becomes a picture, so it can no longer be selected or searched. For a text-only document, pick the “Light” level, or skip this tool entirely — a text PDF is already small.
I compressed a file and it did not shrink. Why?
Some files are already optimised: there is nothing left to gain. In that case Utily hands the original back untouched rather than a heavier version, and tells you so. This is common with a PDF containing only text, or a photo already compressed by a phone.
What happens to my text in the AI tools?
The AI tools are the only ones that send anything outside your browser: your text goes to a model hosted by a third party to be processed. The free models used here may keep that text and use it for training. So do not paste anything confidential, personal or professionally sensitive. Every other tool on the site is unaffected.
Where are my favourites and recent tools stored?
In your browser, on your device, and nowhere else. Nothing is sent, so they do not follow you from one computer to another. Clearing the site data erases them. It is also why no account is needed.
Does it work without an internet connection?
Once the page has loaded, most tools keep working even if you lose your connection, because the work happens on your device. You still need to be online to open the page the first time, and the tools marked “Server request” need the network to answer.
Which browser do I need?
Any recent browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, on desktop or phone. A few unusual image formats, such as the HEIC used by iPhones, cannot be decoded everywhere — the tool will say so clearly rather than fail silently.
A result looks wrong to me. What should I do?
Report it. The calculators rely on formulas and rates that can change, or differ by country. Describe what you entered and what you expected: that is what makes a real fix possible. The “Report a problem” link sits at the bottom of every tool.
How do I find my way among all these tools?
The search bar is the simplest route: describe your problem in your own words, even loosely. “pdf too large”, “photo under 2mb”, “days between two dates” all land on the right tool. The categories are for browsing when you do not yet know what you are looking for, and the tools you open stay within reach under “Recent”.
