Compression works by re-encoding: the image is redrawn into a canvas and exported at a lower quality. A setting around 75-85% usually divides the weight by three to five with no visible difference. EXIF metadata (camera, GPS position, date) is stripped in the process, which shrinks the file further and protects your privacy.
